My grandfather (a doctor) used to have a notebook with herbal recipes in it - alas I don't have it. He started as a doctor before the NHS was created and his patients used to pay him a shilling a year as an insurance premium for his care. Perhaps we should go back to this direct model?? He had a wonderful manner. People loved him. The two-volume 'A Modern Herbal' by Mrs. M. Grieve F.R.H.S. did come down to me though. The subtitle is 'The medicinal, culinary, cosmetic and economic properties, cultivation and folk-lore of herbs, grasses, fungi, shrubs and trees with all their modern scientific uses'. Published 1931 by Jonathan Cape Ltd.

I've tried reading the original Culpepper. I can't because all the names of the medicinal plants have changed. It's very difficult to read. I'm used to reading gothic script and old books, but the medical jargon and the latinate usage are too thick. It would be great if there was an updated English Herbal--is that what this book by Mrs. Grieve is?

yes, exactly. I think it's available as an e-book as well if you can't find a hard copy https://blueskywildlife.com/files/4667282-a-modern-herbal-english-edition
