DEBATE: Is Elon Musk Out of His Mind?

Cannot mention competing social networks on Twitter!

An hour ago, Twitter forbade its users from mentioning links to and usernames on Facebook, Mastodon, Instagram, and Trump’s Truth Social.

We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter.

I tried to post a link to mastodon to see what would happen: the link is not allowed to be posted!

I cannot reconcile how a self-described “free speech absolutist” disallows people from sharing their usernames on other platforms.

The sheer lunacy of all of it, including NOT allowing Trump’s Truth Social, but allowing Gab, is astounding.

It would be like me trying to prohibit mentions of El Gato Malo or Eugyppius in comments to my articles. What would you say if I tried that?

The Opposing View

EDIT: I decided to add this section to my article to give voice to my readers who disagree with me. They said, to effect, the following:

• Elon owns Twitter and can do whatever he wants. He could forbid mentions of the word “purple” if that were his desire.

• Walmart has the right to disallow passing out Costco flyers it its parking lot.

• Twitter needs to distance itself from “censorship platforms.”

As I believe that reasonable people are entitled to an opinion, I will not argue with the above points — so you can decide who you agree with.
