That would mean a 'fifth column' is undermining the body's immune system every single time it encounters a variant of coronavirus (either one of the 7 natural strains or a lab-tinkered one), AND ALSO every time it encounters a flu variant (3 types, each with their own variants).
How long the individual's immune system can hold up under that strain is probably variable, but I imagine it could take a year or two, until it gets hit one time too many with (what used to be) a relatively mild illness.
Reminds me of the scene in StarWars 2 where Darth Vadar attacks Luke with things detaching from the wall and being hurled at him--you can only defend yourself so long before you are overwhelmed with incoming. And the unfortunate thing is most people are weak in their vitamins and mineral uptake which makes it a loosing proposition.
